How to Build Credit in the USA with an ITIN: A 12-Month Plan
Building credit from zero is one of the most common financial challenges for immigrants in the United States. Your payment history from home does not transfer, and without a U.S. credit score, you pay more for almost everything. This 12-month plan works with just an ITIN.
Why credit matters more than you think
Your credit score affects your car insurance rate, whether a landlord approves your rental application, the interest rate on a car loan, and eventually the rate on a home mortgage. Without credit history, you are often paying the maximum possible price for these things.
Months 1-2: The foundation
**Open a bank account.** If you do not have one, this is step one. Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Chase, and most credit unions accept ITIN in Florida.
**Open a credit builder loan.** Self Financial (self.inc) and most credit unions offer loans specifically designed to build credit. The money is held in a locked account while you make monthly payments of $25 to $100. When you finish, you receive the money and have a documented payment history reported to all three credit bureaus.
**Get a secured credit card.** OpenSky Secured Visa and First Progress accept ITIN with no prior credit check required. You deposit $200 to $500 as collateral — that deposit is your credit limit and it is always yours.
Months 3-6: Active building
**Use the card, but keep it small.** Make regular small purchases — gas, groceries, a streaming service. Keep your utilization (amount used vs. limit) between 5% and 30%. On a $300 limit, that means not charging more than $90.
**Pay the full balance every month.** Not the minimum — the full balance. This eliminates interest charges and demonstrates financial discipline. Set up automatic full-balance payment so you never miss.
Months 7-12: Acceleration
**The authorized user shortcut.** If you have a family member or trusted friend with good credit (700+) and years of history on a card, ask them to add you as an authorized user. You do not need to use the card. Their history on that account is automatically added to your credit file and can add 50 to 100 points.
**Request a credit limit increase.** After six months of perfect payments, call the bank and request a limit increase on your secured card. A higher limit with the same spending lowers your utilization ratio.
**Add a second card.** With a score of 600 or higher, you can apply for starter cards like Capital One Platinum or Discover It Secured, which eventually convert to unsecured cards and return your deposit.
The three credit bureaus and your ITIN: what nobody tells you
One of the most surprising realities for immigrants building credit with an ITIN: the three major credit bureaus do not treat ITINs the same way. Knowing the difference saves time and frustration.
**Equifax** accepts ITINs reliably. You can create an account at equifax.com using your ITIN and access your credit report directly. This is the most ITIN-accessible bureau.
**TransUnion** also processes credit history with ITINs without issues. Credit Karma uses primarily TransUnion and Equifax to generate your score, which is why it works correctly for ITIN holders. Credit Karma is the recommended free monitoring tool.
**Experian** is the problematic one. Its online portal generally requires an SSN to register and view your report. This does not mean your creditors are not reporting your history to Experian — they likely are — but you cannot access the report through their website with just an ITIN. If you need your Experian report, request it through annualcreditreport.com (the free official government site) or by calling Experian directly.
The practical consequence for mortgages: mortgage lenders typically pull all three bureaus. You may have excellent history at Equifax and TransUnion and nothing at Experian. Many ITIN lenders use the "middle score" (the one between the highest and lowest). Without data at Experian, the lender usually uses the lower of your two scores. Ask your lender exactly what policy they use before you apply.
Realistic timeline
Score visible at 3–4 months. 600–630 at 6 months. 650–680 at one year. 700+ between 18 and 24 months with consistent behavior.
